On Saturday, Oct. 26, the Mary Webb Centre for the Arts became a Newfoundland kitchen party as The Rowdymen, with guest fiddler Johanna Sö traveled to Highgate. Vocalist George Masswohl and percussionist Greg Hawco of the hit musical “Come From Away” joined legendary guitarist Gerry Finn to form this amazing and talented foursome. In speaking with George about his time in the hit musical, he estimated that he had been onstage in approximately 1000 performances in Toronto.

They started off the show with the rollicking rant “True Newfoundlanders” and it was obvious right away that this was going to be a fun and lively evening. Next up was a song in honour of Gerry’s new son Oscar, which encouraged audience participation and got everybody involved!

They followed up with “Jug O’ Punch” and the “St. John’s Waltz”, two wonderful East Coast tunes. Twice during the concert, singer and story teller George left the stage to allow Greg, Gerry and Johnna to captivate the crowd with amazing instrumental numbers that wowed the full house. They also sang several songs “a Capella” which really highlighted their fine vocals and harmonies. Throughout the performance, Greg switched between playing a Greek bouzouki that is surprisingly popular in Newfoundland and a hand held drum, both of which added to this group’s unique sound.

Throughout the night, George entertained the audience with narratives about their songs, their careers and lives. He expressed surprise at the number of new audience members, and also at how many of those present had actually travelled to Newfoundland. He told the crowd that Greg and Gerry were originally from Newfoundland and now lived in Ontario, while he was from Ontario but had moved to Newfoundland about 6 years ago and loved it. Fiddler Johanna hails from Fairbanks Alaska but now resides just outside Pembroke, Ontario.

Rather than go offstage and then return for the encore, George ended the evening with two songs –  their final tune, plus their encore selection “Big Bow Wow.” It was a perfect way to end a great concert, well enjoyed by all.
